Anti-Roll Bar Link Rods - Causing Noise? (No, Wishbone !!!)
Hi,
Has anybody had knocking/rumbling noises from the front suspension when driving over bumps? I have had these noises for some time now but my dealer didn't suggest anything and the car has been through MOT (annual test) ok. I have seen an advert selling new anti-roll bar links, saying that these will cure the knocking noise. These links are about 250mm long with a ball-joint at each end, linking the end of the anti-roll bar to the strut, just below the spring seat. I've searched the forum but didn't find anything related to 'anti-roll'. The cost is quite low compared to the full wishbones, and they should be quite easy to fit, so it's probably worth a try. Any experiences please? Thanks, Sivvy Last edited by Sivvy; 4th July 2008 at 23:00. Reason: Amending Title |

Use the keywork "clank" and check the first three threads. I guess the problems are related.

Thanks Dirk,
I had previously read those threads but I don't think this is what I'm hearing. The term clack or clank suggests a metallic clicking noise, such as bearing movement. What I'm hearing is more of a 'thump' as if the suspension or engine area is being hit by a heavy rubber mallet (hammer). Definitely not metallic. It happens most when hitting holes, drain covers etc at about 20mph, and usually it is one 'strike', but if I drive over very rough ground or cobbles it may make the noise many times in quick succession. Anyway, tonight I have ordered some new anti-roll bar links; I'll post my findings when fitted and tested. Regards, Sivvy |

I noticed this same "thump" as well also when the car was only a Year or so old.
I never really had it checked out, so not sure what caused the problem

Anti-roll bar 'drop links' replaced today, about a one hour job - I did it without taking the wheels off.
Anyhow, sounded ok at first but a quick drive including a road junction that I know always causes the noise, and there it was - no difference. So, I guess it will have to be the wishbones next. Or could it be the shock absorbers? |

I've done that type of work before but not on EV2, so not sure how difficult it is to get to that part. Regards, Andrew |

Some more details. As I understood (according to the invoice), the exchanged parts were #6 and #7 (see picture)

Problem found - Wishbone (Querlenker)
Hi,
After 2 more months wondering what this sound is, I'm quite sure I have found the problem. With the car jacked up at the front, and turning the wheel very strongly from side to side (as if turned by the rocking the steering wheel quickly), I could feel some movement and hear metallic noises. With some difficulty I was able to do this whilst under the car, and could see movement at the ball-joint at the outer end of the wishbone. I am a little annoyed at myself for not checking this before, but it was only after vigorous shaking that the noise occurred. This may be why it has passed at least one MOT (TUV) test with the problem unreported, but I know this should be part of our test and a good inspector should have seen it. After reading the Querlenker thread again I see there have been quite a few reports but not so many recently. I am hoping that this was an early problem and the part has now been re-designed? Has anybody done this work themselves? I noticed the instruction kindly posted by kalleh on an A-Arm thread and managed to translate it, so I think I know what to do. The last part seems to instruct how to settle the car to the correct height before tightening the chassis screws? http://www.eurovan2.com/forum/attach...rer-lenker.pdf Thanks for any advice. Regards, Sivvy |

Job done, DIY Wishbone replacement
Fitted new wishbone today, and knocking noise has gone at last!
Took about 4 hours, mainly because I didn't have a balljoint splitter that would fit in the small gap available. Will probably do the other side soon and will get a tool organised first. Regards, Sivvy |

Sivvy : Excellent investigation work there !
Heard the same noise recently before givening the 807 back to the stealer for the new C8. I will tell the new owner if I know who it is or see the car driven around... Very Good ! |
