theft warning back seats MPV

Hi all,

This evening on the Belgium TV (19h news bulletin) there was a warning that recently the back seats of 6 MPV's in Belgium have been stolen out of the cars, when parked in front of the house.

Appearently it comes over from Holland, this time it was in the neighbourhood of Ghent (Lovendegem, Maldegem), but when you Google you'll find it happened in Verviers also (also not far away from the border with the Netherlands... ). All 5 back seats were stolen...

I think this is good to know for each of us, as a preventive warning.

A light with an infrared movement sensor mounted on your house in the neighbourhood of the car could prevent this, for example, no doubt there are other solutions too (alarm, ...).

But I´m sure, your advice is good for everywhere, not only in Belgium or Netherlands!

this should be a warning to people who buy seats on E-*** or somewhere else "used" - "make sure this is not "hot" stuff - if we do not buy the stolen stuff the value goes down and it is not worth steeling them

BTW - I wonder how much time they have to stell them - they have to break into the car - breaking the window does not help if you have the car completely locked (super-lock 2 times close button on remote), so they have to somehow open at least one door - then they have to dsimount them - when I think how heavy those seats are and how much time and broken fingers it take to get them out from the car, they must have very much time to do this.

IF you live in an area where this happens more often you could lock the seats with one of the steel ropes you can lock - you can buy them with and without alarm.

Locking the seats - good thought - but:

1) the thiefs have damaged your car already by trying to go inside
2) finding the seats locked they could work-out their frustration on your car furthermore


Maybe an option is to effectively lock the seats, and put some discrete stickers on the inside of your windows telling that the seats are locked & marked, so it doesn't make any sense breaking open the car.

Otherwise, just the presence of such stickers could bring some kind of people on bad thoughts....

Maybe the best is to lock them, mark them so that the marks are visible from outside the car (instead of stickers on the windows), but mark them on other places under the seats too, where the mark can't be removed that easily (mark grooved in the metal supports and not (only) in the plastic parts).

But I'm warned now, and I'll work-out a solution really quickly!
(As sometimes my car has to sleep on a hotel parking (in the Netherlands!)...)

So why not to install the most simple alarm, which activates itself when one of the doors is opened without using remote? Taking out all the seats takes not 10sec, but much more, and I think, that alarm should scare thieves.

Something like that, indeed. A colleague already suggested to connect the transmitter of a wireless door-bell parallel on the 12V interior light, making the bell ring in the house when doors are opened.

Ah you think you're smart .
No no, the receiver is a portable bell on a battery which you can place everywhere you want (so even in your hotel room, for example) because the wireless connection works on a really long distance. Specs talk about 100m in open field, for example.

At my work we have such a wireless bell at the back door: when there are trucks with some delivery, they ring at that door, and the wireless bell (receiver) is placed in our offices. Works really good.

The battery in the receiver holds very long, and the battery in the transmitter (button) you don't need in this case: short-circuit the button contacts, and connect the + of the battery-clamp to the + of the interior light (evt. via a resistor or zener-diode ct., batt. wil not be a 12V one), and the - of the battery-clamp to the GND of your car.

So this idea isn't that bad

How about a way to get the Nav system to call (or text) our mobile saying "Help, I'm being broken into!"?
That would be pretty neat, as long as the rotten thieves didn't realise it was happening.

I guess the Nav doesn't actually start up without the ignition on, so it might be impossible - unless you know different...

Don't know , don't have a NAV system..... - but I'll work out the system with the wireless door bell, that's for sure
