Exclamation European Member Map

Members and Friends,

I'm very proud to introduce the lastest innovation to our Forum: The automated european member map!

Arnd took the effort to adapt a vBulletin script to fulfill our needs and I'm very pleased with the result.

The member map allows you to enter your postal code (for Germany, Austria and Switzerland) in your profile and automatically, your nickname will appear on the map along with your location.

For members of the other european countries, Arnd created an european map and implemented the possibility to enter GPS coordinates!

All members are invited to complete their profile with postal code or coordionates in order for our community to obtain an excellent overview of the member's spread across europe. The link can be found in the navigation bar under "Useful Links/Nützliche Links - Member Map".

Additional notes:
  1. The map isn't created dynamically, but every half hour. So if someone enters his postcode/coords he will not appear on the map directly. To manual update the map, you can open http://www.eurovan2.com/forum/membermap.php?mm_action=c. If you still see the old map you'll have to clear your browsers cache.
  2. The second option to enter the latitude and longitude directly has to take place in degrees not in degrees/minutes/seconds. Members can use www.multimap.com to determine their position.
  3. Sorry for our members from the USA, Malaysia and other extra-european countries. It is too hard in the first step to incorporate a world map with zoom function....
Thanks again to Arnd for the excellen job!

Fantastic!

The Internet Explorer title line says "Membership für VB3" though... I'd expect it to read "Membership für EV2"

Wunderbar, echt Klasse Arnd

Thnaks

Thank you all.

Some additional note. The script is using OpenGeoDb as postcode database. There are some known limits, e.g. Axels problem (sorry Axel). Also it may be that not every town is listed in that database (already had this with one Swiss town). So if you enter your postcode and don't appear on the map, you'll have to use the geo coords and delete your postcode entry.

Arnd

P.S.: If you're looking for a nice, free program to generate maps, take a look at MapCreator.

Smile Is Europe enough?

You may have to enlarge your view of the Eurovan community and add some exotic countries, like Israel!

Well done. Nice to know.

I just add my zip code.
